PREGNANCY
HOW CHIROPRACTIC CAN HELP
Chiropractors work with the body’s ability to adapt and function the way it is designed to. Chiropractic care in pregnancy is vital to the normal physiological function of both the mother and baby in pregnancy and birth.
A women’s body is under a tremendous amount of stress throughout pregnancy. Forward head posture can lead to neck and shoulder pain, headaches, tension, radiating pain down arms and into hands. The growing abdomen alters center of gravity, tilts pelvis forward, increases the lumbar curve which can cause hip, lower back, pubic pain, and sciatica. Widening of the rib cage can cause mid back pain, rib pain, shortness of breath, sharp shooting pain along rib cage and heartburn.
Here are some of the benefits for you:
- Make you feel more comfortable
- Reduce torsion to the ligaments that support the uterus
- Balances the pelvis to optimize the amount of space for baby to grow
- More space allows your baby to get in to a great position for birth
Here are some of the benefits for your baby:
- Decreases intra-uterine constraint
- Allows more room for your baby to grow
- Easier for your baby to get into the best position for birth
Ohm Hypothesis on Sacral Subluxation and Dystocia :“The theoretical and clinical framework of chiropractic in the care of pregnant women is that sacral subluxation many contribute to difficult labor for the mother ( i.e. dystocia). Dystocia is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby mal-presentation. The correction of sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia. In this clinical framework, it is proposed that sacral misalignment may contribute to these 3 primary causes of dystocia via uterine nerve interference, pelvic misalignment and the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments. The resulting tense muscles and ligaments and their aberrant effect on the uterus may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth.” – Jeanne Ohm
I’m feeling pretty good, should I still make an appointment?
Yes! Visiting a chiropractor who is trained in prenatal chiropractic is very important. You don’t have to be in pain for there to be a problem. In fact, some women feel better when they are pregnant because of the pregnancy hormones. Pregnancy hormones relax muscles and ligaments so some women who are normally in a lot of pain when they aren’t pregnant can feel better when they are pregnant. Don’t let pain determine that health of your spine and nervous system.
